Classes
Our class pedagogy is very different from your standard school environment. Drawing on the research of authors such as Jo Boaler (Professor of Mathematics Education at Stanford), Paul Lockhart (PhD in Mathematics from Columbia University), and Benjamin Bloom (educational psychologist), we teach math differently.
Student math achievement in the United States falls towards the bottom compared to the rest of the wealthy, developed world. We believe this is because math is taught simply as a sequence of steps to get to an answer, each year the sequences getting more and more difficult, yet still at the core the same. It’s no wonder so many students hate math; who wants to learn to do something that a computer can do much better?
Our answer is that we believe math is full of beauty, awe, challenge, logic, and community, and should be taught as such. Countless times we’ve seen students previously hating math class find themselves shocked that an hour has passed. We get to the why of math in an engaging and challenging way that your student will get excited about.
The classes we offer are designed to be flexible for homeschool families, but any students from any educational background are welcome. When you enroll your student in an ENC Math class, you can expect a “flipped classroom” format which means the student has the freedom to prepare for class at their own pace, and once in class, we have the freedom to dive deep into concepts in an engaging way. We meet 2-3 times per week for an hour of instruction, after which is 30 minutes of tutor / homework time with the teacher. Khan Academy is our primary resource because of its low cost (free!) and excellent formative assessments built directly into the service. This method of instruction allows deeper and more personalized learning and feedback from the teacher.
We offer classes based on interest, so please use the link below and let us know of your interest in a math class with ENC Math!
